02Calculation

The complete equation

Not a footnote. Every step, every number, the dataset it came from and the rounding rule applied to it.

  1. reported price ÷ purity

    equals price per pure gram

The adjustment the whole index rests on. Purity roughly doubled over the period, so unadjusted prices are not comparable across it.

    Source: DEA / UNODC

  2. $105 ÷ 0.55

equals $190 per pure gram, 2008

Reported price around 55% purity in the show's first broadcast year.

    Source: DEA / UNODC

  3. $29 ÷ 0.97

equals $30 per pure gram, last verified

By 2024 purity is high enough that the adjustment barely moves the number — which is itself the result.

    Source: DEA / UNODC

  4. $190 → $30

equals the purity premium, competed away

Walter's product thesis was sound in 2008 and worthless by the mid-2010s.

Conversion — The series is already purity-adjusted. Dividing a reported price by reported purity is what makes a 2008 observation comparable with a 2024 one — without it, a purity change reads as a price change.

03Affordability

Price is only the first question

How much it cost, how much the underlying thing appreciated, and how hard it was for a person to afford — three different questions with three different answers.

What the old money buys

What the 2008 outlay of $190 would buy at 2024 prices.

2008 prices1 pure grams
2024 prices6.33 pure grams

The same money buys 633.3% of what it did — the rest is price.

Inflation-adjusted value

What the 2008 price is worth in 2024 money, against what the thing actually costs.

2008 price, restated$277
2024 price, actual$30.00

Real change of −89.2%. Adjusted for inflation it is cheaper than it was, however the nominal price reads.

04Interpretation

What drove the change

Walter White's business model was a purity premium: a scarce high-quality product in a market with no way to verify quality. In 2008 that premium genuinely existed. Reported purity averaged around half, and a pure gram cost several times what an ordinary gram of powder did.

It then disappeared almost completely. Purity rose past 90% and stayed there, while the price per pure gram fell by roughly five-sixths in nominal terms and close to nine-tenths in real terms. Industrial-scale production did to the purity premium exactly what analytics did to on-base percentage in the Moneyball index: made it universal, and therefore worthless as an edge.

The public-policy reading is the uncomfortable one. Two decades of supply-side enforcement coincided with a product that became more potent and dramatically cheaper per unit of active substance. Whatever the enforcement achieved, it did not price this market upward.

Industrial substitution

Small-scale production gave way to large synthesis routes with consistent output. Consistency is what destroys a quality premium.

Precursor control cycles

Restrictions produce sharp, short price spikes — the 2007 peak is one — followed by adaptation and a resumed decline.

Purity as the hidden variable

Unadjusted street prices fell by about two-thirds. Adjusted for purity they fell by far more. Most of the real decline is invisible without the adjustment.

No brand mechanism

Illicit markets have no way to certify quality, so a reputation premium cannot be defended once supply is uniformly good.

What this index does not claim

  • Confidence is Estimated, and deliberately so. These figures come from law-enforcement purchase and seizure records — a sample of an unobservable market, not a price index. Read the direction, not the level.
  • The quote is paraphrased and not verified against the series or authorised subtitles.
  • This index carries no affordability or income comparison. Framing an illicit drug as a household purchase would be both analytically wrong and editorially indefensible.
  • Purity figures are averages across seizures of very different sizes and market levels. Wholesale and retail purity differ substantially.
  • Nothing here describes production, procurement or distribution, and no such detail will be added. The index exists to explain a pricing mechanism, not a market.
